Trindad & Tobago Oil & Gas 2013 OGI Release

January 11, 2013

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the world’s oldest players in oil and gas, vying for Philadelphia for having drilled the world’s first well, and with over 100 years of uninterrupted production since.

Where oil was the mainstay of the country’s production for the better part of its history, the last few decades have seen a shift towards a natural gas-based economy and daily natural gas production has nearly tripled, from 1.5 bcf per day in 2001 to just over 4 bcf today. The abundance of gas has fueled the creation of the Point Lisas Industrial Estate, and propelled the tiny country to become the largest producer of methanol and ammonia in the world, as well as home to the largest LNG train in the Atlantic Basin. As Trinidad continues to expand its markets, attention has shifted to Trinidad’s vast potential on and offshore, with a number of deepwater bidding round scheduled throughout the year and substantial investments in EOR already underway.
