Could you briefly introduce Resultant Consulting to our international audience?

IW: Our expertise is structural integrity, providing infrastructure audits and dynamic structural analysis specifically for the mining industry. Today, we are a team of 20 people, including eight structural engineers and one mechanical engineer, based out of Johannesburg but with a second office in Mauritius that helps us facilitate transactions with our international clients. We provide our services all over the world, including Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, but Africa is our home turf. Particularly in South Africa, we have built a strong track record with clients like Harmony Gold, Anglo American, Anglo Platinum, Northern Platinum, and others who rely on us for much of their structural integrity work.

Could you elaborate on Resultant’s expertise and your market positioning as structural integrity specialists?

CC: We have two parts to the business: Izak looks after the structural integrity audits, where we walk the entire plant of a mine site, generating a report and highlighting any concerns. Based on the report generated after an inspection, we provide support in terms of repairs required for any stressed critical structures. Since we often work at remote sites or in locations difficult to go back and forth, such as Burkina Faso, Guinea, or Côte d’Ivoire, we rely on two 3D scanners to scan the entire plant and gather all the information without having to travel multiple times to location. Then, the second part of the business is our dynamic analysis and consulting side, which I look after. We are very proud to have won two awards recognizing innovative designs on stockpile conveyors. Notably, we won the Engineer Excellence Award at the Steel Awards 2024 for our work on the Pueblo Viejo Stockpile Feed Conveyor project.

What are some of the market trends or demand drivers that could propel your growth moving forward?

IW: If we look at the mining industry as a whole, aging assets represent an important growth space for us. You will find many of the African mines have been operating for 15-20 years and are reaching a point where they require critical maintenance, so we help them work out the critical aspects they need to attend to first. We can help them rehabilitate in a cost-effective way so they can continue producing safely and competitively. A consistent part of our continued growth is also shaft work. South Africa is known to have some of the deepest mines in the world, and mining operators are legally required to conduct periodical third-party shaft assessments by a professionally registered engineer. Our impartial and critical feedback is key to making informed decisions on the shafts.

Are you prioritizing any particular geographies?

IW: We are naturally focused on Africa, leveraging our knowledge of the market, our location, and the fact that we can be anywhere in 24 hours and provide a quick turnaround, as well as being in the same timezone; also, within Africa we have a competitive fee against our Australian or Canadian competitors. The mining community tends to be quite closed, everybody knows everybody, and you will see people moving from one company to another, so word of mouth has really worked in our favor in terms of supporting our organic growth. Of course, we must also put ourselves out there and help our clients find us. 2025 will be our third year at Mining Indaba and we have also participated in recent years at Mines and Money. With our new office in Mauritius, we are setting up a foundation for our international business. Next week, we are actually going to a mine site in Albania.

Could you share a closing message?

CC: We just want to say thank you to all our clients: Thank you for entrusting us with your assets. We are privileged and grateful. Our commitment to you is that we will never hand in substandard work or a subpar solution, even if it costs us money out of pocket. Quality is our governing philosophy, and the fact that we, as a small firm, are chosen over consulting firms with thousands of people behind them, speaks volumes.

MACIG 2025 - Mining in Africa Country Investment Guide

It is said that mining is a patient industry. Current demand projections are not. Demand for minerals deemed ‘critical’ is set to increase almost fourfold by 2030, according to the UN. Demand for nickel, cobalt and lithium is predicted to double, triple and rise ten-fold, respectively, between 2022 and 2050. The world will need to mine more copper between 2018 and 2050 than it has mined throughout history. 2050 is also the deadline to curb emissions before reaching a point of ‘no return.’ The pace of mineral demand and the consequences of not meeting it force the industry to act fast and take more risks. Mining cannot afford to be a patient industry anymore. The scramble for supply drives miners back to geological credentials, and therefore to places like the African Central Copperbelt.
